Verbs: Verb Overview


Verbs are the spirit of a language.

Verbs can build up complex layers of meaning, so you should spend a lot of time thinking about verbs.

There are three main kinds of verb: marker verbs, primary verbs and main verbs.

In this part of the grammar you can study how verbs are formed; look at irregular verbs; find out the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs; study time and tense, the past, the past and present, the present, and the present and future; look at the diffferent uses of active and passive forms; consider the key verbs of 'be', 'do' and 'have'; study the very important set of modal [opinion] marker verbs; and learn about reported speech and how it is used.
